These longer reads are written as ordered lists inside prose. Open them in a second tab while you work.

Is it safe to download MSI Afterburner?

Treat safety as a supply-chain question, not a vibe. Download only from channels you already trust for PC software (publisher or GPU vendor ecosystems). When Windows shows SmartScreen, read the publisher line carefully. If it is not what you expect, cancel and re-fetch. This site never mirrors installers.

Why does my GPU show as missing?

Start boring: reboot, confirm the GPU still appears in Device Manager, then reinstall the graphics driver cleanly if anything looks half-installed. Remote-desktop sessions and some hybrid-GPU routing can hide the adapter Afterburner should talk to. If controls stay grey, use the detection article on this blog as a checklist rather than guessing.

Do I always need Administrator mode?

Not for read-only monitoring. Some motherboards and fan stacks only accept writes from elevated processes. Test once, note the difference, and avoid staying elevated forever out of habit.

What is OC Scanner supposed to do?

On supported NVIDIA stacks it proposes a voltage-frequency curve as a draft. It is not a certificate that every game will survive. Treat output as a hypothesis, then validate with workloads you actually run, including shader compilation and VRAM-heavy scenes.

I clicked Apply and the machine reset. What order should I undo?

Reboot first so the driver returns to a known layer. Open Afterburner, reset to defaults, and disable profile-on-boot until you know which axis failed. Undo memory offsets before tiny core nudges if crashes were instant. VRAM instability often masquerades as “random” game crashes.

Fans oscillate near one temperature: why?

Steep curve steps create a boundary the GPU crosses repeatedly. Smooth the band where you spend play time; add hysteresis if your tooling exposes it. Laptop EC firmware may still smooth or delay requests. That is firmware policy, not a broken slider.

RTSS overlay never appears: first checks?

Confirm RTSS is running, the title is not blocking third-party overlays, and you are not testing in a mode that disables injection. Try borderless windowed once to isolate a fullscreen path issue. Competitive titles may forbid overlays entirely. Respect that.

Does tuning void warranty?

Policies differ by region and evidence chain. Assume aggressive voltage edits carry more risk than mild fan tuning. This site is not legal advice. Read your vendor documents when wording matters for RMA decisions.

Laptop support: what should I expect?

Expect smaller headroom, more policy gates, and MUX quirks. Battery vs wall power can change which GPU is active. If sensors look idle while a game runs, verify which adapter is driving the frame before interpreting temperatures.

How is Afterburner different from vendor “centers”?

Afterburner is historically strong at cross-vendor monitoring and manual tuning. Vendor hubs may expose OEM-only features (RGB, certain power modes). Prefer one owner for a given behavior. Two controllers fighting the same fan policy is a classic self-inflicted bug.

How do I reset cleanly after experiments?

Use the in-app reset, remove startup hooks until stable, and export a known-good profile before chasing another idea. After major driver updates, re-baseline: defaults first, then reintroduce changes one at a time.

Why does an overlay seem to cost FPS?

Drawing and polling are not free. Reduce graph density, disable unused plots, and compare with overlay off on CPU-bound titles. The point is measurement, not decoration.

What is RTSS relative to Afterburner?

Afterburner is the tuning and sensor surface for many setups. RTSS is the companion many users install for on-screen display and pacing experiments. They coordinate often, but RTSS keeps its own per-application list. Learn both panels deliberately.

Are synthetic stress tests enough validation?

They find gross instability quickly. They are weak substitutes for the exact games you play. Keep at least one repeatable in-game scene for before/after comparisons.

Why do numbers look wrong on hybrid laptops?

Multiple GPUs and display paths change which counters apply. Confirm which GPU is active, whether you are on AC power, and whether an OEM mode locks tuning. Idle-looking graphs during gameplay often mean you are reading the wrong adapter.

How do I keep profiles across reboots safely?

Only enable load-on-boot after a profile survives real play. Keep a human-readable note of offsets and curve shapes outside the app. Driver branches can invalidate assumptions silently.

Does Afterburner work on AMD GPUs?

Often yes for monitoring and many controls, but exposed sliders vary by generation and driver. NVIDIA-only helpers do not map one-to-one. If controls are missing, verify support matrices before assuming corruption.

Should I enable Start with Windows on day one?

No. Prove stability manually first. Startup hooks apply curves and offsets before you have watched temperatures yourself. That is a sharp edge for beginners.
